Author EA Games
Description Crazy crash action

Our cousins over in the US seem to have a penchant for smashing things. Demolition derbies there get huge crowds just cheering and whooping as they smash up old and sometimes even new cars. We don't quite have the same mania here. However, EA have decided to put the pedal to the metal and see how crazy things can get.

Except that once you start playing the game, they're really not all that crazy, but instead seem to defy the laws of physics. The basic aim of the game is to get to the finish area and score as many points as you can. This is achieved by performing various stunts and you'll get a trophy if you get a certain score. The stunts don't all involve the car however, many of them involve you.

Driving the car is easy, press right and left to make it go forwards or backwards respectively. Yep, the courses are all left to right. Tapping right (6) will speed the car up and on the rocket cars if you press 5 you'll use your boost of NOS. If you want to flip the car, you can press 7 or 9 to make it look like a lowrider and 8 will make it jump, looking like Knight Rider.

The key to the game however lies in ejecting yourself out of the car and flying / somersaulting around like Speedball from the New Mutant comics. For those unfamiliar with the character he basically bounced around off stuff. While driving you press 5 and an arrow appears which shows you the launch trajectory for your driver. Press it longer and the higher the arrow will aim. Let go of 5 and your driver will be forcibly ejected into the air.

You might think that things stop there, but oh no. You have to navigate your driver through giant rope rings, rings of fire and even swing around on great big hooks. And if you press 5 you can keep your momentum going by somersaulting away like some superhero. Pressing 6 will make the guy tuck into a little ball to speed up his motion.

So using this combination of 5 and 6 you can make your driver travel pretty far. Which is good too, because once you hit the ground then you get a damage percentage. Too much and it's game over. But if you don't hit 100% then you will continue the level, but only if there is a ride (car) near you. If you fall onto an area with no car then it's hasta la vista baby.

So everything is going well, you're bouncing along in the air, respawning into the nearest ride when you fall and then you notice you haven't unlocked certain levels. That's because on some levels there is a secret exit for you to find. This will usually be fairly easy to spot (some higher platform or the like) but not always easy to get to. Still, play the level a few times and you should be able to figure it out.

As the game progresses you get to use gliders and even jetpacks to navigate the courses with. They get faster and crazier, so why the developers called it CAR crash mania I will never know. A more apt title would have been 'crazy stunt using cars or other flying stuff while you can also bounce around for ages in the air' mania.

Graphics are pretty decent 3D, reminiscent of the 3rd Nate Adams game. The animation and sound effects are decent (I love the way he splats when he hits the ground) and the levels are just short enough that you get used to em pretty quick. My only gripe is that it was over far too quickly. Sure, I can play any of the levels I unlocked in training mode and try and beat my high score, but now I've found and done everything where's the fun in that?

Overall a decent effort which is fun to play but ultimately over far too quickly.
